Joe Torre and Derek Jeter celebrate #9 together.Â

Well, the Yankees are in, and the Pirates are out for the 9th straight year, although Pittsburgh’s postseason-less streak is longer than 9 years. If you read the post before this, you’d understand why I’m so happy. It’s that time of year again.

I think the Yankees looked good this year, but I had my doubts early on. The Red Sox surged and the Yankees fell, and then all of a sudden, the roles reversed and New York hasn’t looked back. They’re on pace to win about 98 games, which is respectible, however 100 seems to be the cutoff for a “great” team. Here’ how I see the playoff picture:

American League

#1 New York
#2 Minnesota
#3 Oakland

Wildcard: Detroit

National League

#1 New York (Mets)
#2 St. Louis
#3 San Diego

Wildcard: Philadelphia

In the AL, New York will win the best of five with Detroit, 3-1, and Minnesota will win over Oakland 3-2. The ALCS will be tough, with Johan Santana going in at least two games, but New York will edge them out in 6 games.

In the NL, I see New York handling San Diego 3-0 in the divisional series, and Philadelphia providing the upset, winning 3-1. The NLCS will pit New York and Philadelphia. This should be a hell of a series. This will be a 7-game series, with New York taking the Pennant.

So we’re in for a subway series again. I think the result will be the same as last time. I just don’t think the Mets have the postseason experience the Yankees do. The Yankees are getting their guns back, and with perfect timing. Matsui has been brilliant at the plate since his return, and we hear good things about Sheffield. The club should be more rested than the Mets too (if my scenario pans out).

Well, I’m off to bed, to dream about a 27′th Yankee world championship! Bye, all.
