33 Dead in Blacksburg, VA
It’s with a heavy heart that I write this post. Although it’s not news at this last hour, I haven’t chimed in yet. I want to send my condolences and express my deepest sympathies to the families involved in this tragedy. I have been watching this story develop on the news, and now that I have the facts, I will turn the news off when this is the issue. I have long been an opponent to the invasive media. The story is written, and the families grieve; we know this. Now let us let them grieve in peace.
This point of view goes all the way back to “Baby Jessica” - the little Texas girl who fell down and got stuck in a ground well. I was only 8 or 9 years old when it happened, but I remember thinking about how bad I would feel if during and after that happened, the news told everyone about it. I knew back then how intrusive the media could be. I was happy she was alive and well, but I thought it was extremely insensitve for the media to cover it so thoroughly. I know it’s their job, but I couldn’t help but think that the family deserved some privacy. I still feel that way.
A headline and a few short paragraphs is plenty for me. I don’t need to see three weeks or more of endless coverage of a story, yet that seems to be all the media does anymore. I am sure with the tragic events which have transpired in Virginia, we will have no news alternative but to watch and listen as the media breaks this story. Like I said, I won’t be watching. I’ve got the story, and I’m sure I’ll hear updates, but I don’t condone, nor will I support the news media making the lives of these families even worse with their incessant prying, digging, and interrogation.
Right on.
