When signed up for the Computer Science major at Slippery Rock University, I swore an oath that I would never use my powers for anything but good. Today, I have broken my oath. I have taken it upon myself to invent the world’s most useless software. Despite it’s uselessness, it’s extremely valuable. This sounds paradoxical, so I’ll explain it for you.

I’ve developed an application, while doing virtually nothing, looks like it is churning on and on. Run this bad boy on your desktop at work and sit back with a magazine, while it runs. The program gives the appearance of scanning the files on your C:\ drive. This is what it looks like (click for full-sized image):

nullscanscreenshot.gif

What is it really doing? Not a damn thing. For the added affect, I even added a progress bar, which appears to be showing you the status of the file scan. Again…it’s pointless but I’m sure you already see the possibilities. Pass it on to your friends if you like. There is no license, but I’m not releasing the source code (unless you ask for it). It took me 20 minutes to do this - which is about as long of an attention span as I have.

What you’ll need:

  1. The Application…. Download the zip file here (nullscanner.zip)
  2. The Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 - Download from Microsoft (if you don’t already have it)

Installation Instructions:

If you have the .NET framework installed, this code doesn’t need to be installed, unzip and run! Otherwise, install the .NET framework first, then run.

Roadmap:

C’mon…a roadmap? I have no plans for this, however, if you’ve got a good idea for another useless application, let me know. I’ll build it and add it here!
