The Holy Church of Apple
With the much anticipated arrival of the new iPhone from Apple, I’m inspired to ask you whether or not Apple is more than just a company. Yes, Apple advertises, sells products and services, and has a fun little website. So from that perspective, Apple is a reputable company. But, considering everything Apple says becomes internet law - upheld by the fanboys (of which there are many), you wonder if people who buy Apple do it for a more nonsecular reason. Is Apple becoming almost religious?
Seems weird doesn’t it? First, it’s just the rival to the big beast of Microsoft. It appeals to those who wish to use their computers for more than spreadsheets and databases (so the PC vs. Mac commericials would have you believe). It looks more like IKEA furniture than a business machine. It’s easy to use and easy to own. Great, I get all that. I’m not a fan, but I understand that. Where I get fuzzy is when people talk about Apple like a revolutionary new idea. People talk about Steve Jobs like a Diety. They get all glossy-eyed and wet themselves when he speaks. They defend his every word to the bitter end. It’s disturbing actually.
Now with the iPhone, people will be able to connect to the “mother ship” 24×7 without hauling around a laptop. Jobs is genius. All he has to do now is command his followers to wear Nike and off themselves at the stroke of midnight.
Ok, now I’m going to go out on a limb here… I want AT&T or Sprint or Verizon to sell me a stellar phone which is only a phone. Yes, I bought a flip phone with a color LCD with games…it was on sale. The games serve me well while on the shitter. I’ve used the other features a handful of times, but not so much that I couldn’t have either done without, or found the same features somewhere other than my cellphone. I wouldn’t mind all this extraneous functionality if you could give me a phone which will maintain a fucking signal until I hang up the phone. I wouldn’t complain then, but since I can’t get a CELL PHONE which acts like a PHONE as well as it acts like a handheld gaming station and camera, I’ve got some reason to complain. Apple’s iPhone will be no better. It’s a media player, a web browser, an organizer, etc… But you know what? I’ll bet AT&T’s phone service on the new device is for shit. They all are.
I think the concept of a palm-sized computer has been tried before…I think they were called PDA’s. More recently, phone functionality has been added and you have devices like Blackberry. Ask anyone who had one and they’ll complain about something. Is Apple really going to be that much better? I doubt it. Don’t be fools. Don’t get suckered into buying the communication device because the church of Apple tells you so. That’s just stupid.
