I think will evanutally be available by streaming. maybe 1/20 cent /song. Every time it is played at a grocery store restaurant etc. It will be charged, and the actual author or owner will be paid a percent. I would to have every song ever recorded available to me for that kind of price, and the money would go to the actual owner. Or at least most of it

Yeah, you hit it on the head. Frank Zappa and Pink Floyd got record deals because someone said, "What the heck, some druggie kids may dig this stuff." There's just so much music available and so much effort put into producing (because the days of going in and recording an album in 6 hours are over, except in the jazz world) and promoting a new album (in order to say it's the no. 1 album in the country and you should buy it because everyone else is) that the labels don't want to sink money into something that might not sell. That is, indeed, why the next chart-topper will sound eerily similar to the last one.

The thing is that the people who lose the most money from illegal downloads (I have an album on itunes and I think I make 63 cents from every download) are the people with the least exposure to begin with. So, if you illegally download my album, I'm losing 6 bucks, whereas if you illegally download American Idiot, the band members are most likely losing less than a quarter each. My album is 10 years old, and I'm not really playing that kind of stuff anymore, but the truth is that I'd rather have, at this point, 1,000 illegal downloads than 100 legal ones, because that's an additional 900 people who may come see me live. The whole thing is an enigma wrapped in a puzzle shrouded by mystery. No right answer.

And that Blogrush thingy is kind of cool- that's how I found you.

To Kimmy:

Metallica is one of the few bands who actually own their master recordings - 99% of all other bands' master tracks are held by the record companies: So therefore the artists don't care if the music is downloaded, they only make $1 per album sale anyways. The bands make money touring and selling merchandise.

So that is why Metallica made an issue of it. I'm not defending them, just getting the facts out.

I say blame it on Metallica. Lars didn't want a fan to listen to their music unless SOMEONE paid. Thanks a lot Lars. As if I didn't regret already spending the money for your And Justice for All tour with the Cult.
