Did they not allow for an explanation of the situation? Or was a degree required; and you said you had one? Forgive-me if you've already explained this and I overlooked it. I do totally understand "paying" for your financially mistakes from many years ago; I too have quite a few "bad" marks on my credit from a long time ago; and I'm waiting as I type to hopefully (by the grace of God!, :) ); to find a new employee packet in my mail-box sometime here soon before my "alleged" start-date for a new job that I signed the offer for approx. 2 wks. ago. I'm not sure if they already conducted my background-check or not in between the 2nd and 3rd interview's, there was a date on the offer, who know's we'll see. If God-forbid not; I'll have to continue to live w/my child's Father (who is a total-jerk 99% of the time); for a while longer until I can get a good job and boot him out.
