I’m not an avid “Delilah After Dark” listener, but my wife listens to her from time to time. The other night we were coming home from a relative’s house and while my inner monologue was complaining about having to listen to the show (Natalie’s car, Natalie’s rules), it occurred to me that I had actually listened to a lot more of the show over the years than I had realized.

I’ve heard the sob stories from lonely wives or girlfriends who have husbands or boyfriends overseas in Iraq or Afghanistan. I’ve heard the “loved and lost” stories, the “I miss my mom who passed away last summer”, the “I just want to tell him I love him.”, and I’ve even heard the occasional “My dog is in doggy heaven now…” stories. Folks, I’m not making fun of these callers, believe me. I know how hard it can be to deal with a distant relationship or the passing of a loved one, even if it’s a pet. I know how cathartic music can be, and if it helps you to call up a perfect stranger and share yourself, then by all means go ahead and do it.

I am surprised that in all the time I’ve ever heard Delilah’s show, or others like it, I’ve never heard a gay man or lesbian woman call the show. I’m not saying it hasn’t happened. I’m saying if it does happen, I’ve never heard it. Has anyone heard an “Adam & Steve” or “Madam & Eve” call on Delilah After Dark?? Comments PA-LEASE.
